Whence It Came | 2019

Whence It Came is an exploration into origin stories. The following first iterations explore the inspiration many Danish designers from the 20th century drew from the Shakers and early American furniture. Borge Mogensen’s J39, often referred to as The Peoples’ Chair, would serve as my model which to replicate. This chair, designed by Mogensen in 1947 for FDB, clearly draws from the techniques and forms used by the Shakers, and seen in the Shaker chair acquired by the Danish Museum of Art and Design in 1935.

The project would explore reinterpreting this chair under 3 distinct set of criteria, and along the way explore efficiencies, or lack there of, in the different methods and materials used.
